Pride Month 2025: Visibility Breaks Down Stereotypes And Promotes Acceptance

This Pride Month, we’re speaking with students and faculty leading LGBTQIA+ societies at their institutions to explore how they’re making a difference. We ask about the impact of their societies and what more business schools can, and should, do to champion inclusivity…

  • Name: Eleanor Platt
  • Role: Programme Coordinator EMBA and IMBA
  • Institution: Nyenrode Business University

What initially drew you to Nyenrode or your current role?

I transitioned to Nyenrode from a previous role in educational administration, where I managed certificate courses globally.

A colleague who worked at Nyenrode spoke highly of the institution, and when a position became available, I applied immediately and was fortunate to join the EMBA Team.

Can you share your experience as an LGBTQ+ staff member within business education? Have you encountered specific challenges or found unique opportunities?

As an ally to the LGBTQ+ community and a mother of a transgender teen, I was invited to join the Nyenrode Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) group, which led to my involvement in the Nyenrode Pride Working Group.

This group, open to both staff and students, promotes a safe and inclusive environment where everyone can be their authentic selves.

We organize a series of events throughout the academic year focused on networking, mentoring, and fostering friendships.

I have received unwavering support and encouragement from colleagues, the University Board, and Nyenrode Alumni.

The working group has not only facilitated professional connections but also fostered friendships, amplifying the positive impact of our initiatives.

Tell us about your LGBTQ+ staff network or society. What role does it play in supporting colleagues and driving inclusion?

Nyenrode Pride launched with a Purple Friday event featuring a lunchtime talk by award-winning author and transwoman Alejandra Ortiz, who shared her personal journey from Mexico to the Netherlands.

The event was well-attended both in person and online, marking a strong start. Another notable event, Pride in Innovation, brought together the LGBTQ+ business and entrepreneurial community at our Amsterdam campus.

This event provided a platform for LGBTQ+ startups to pitch their businesses and receive mentorship and advice from entrepreneurs and business leaders.

The event showcased Nyenrode’s commitment to supporting and encouraging the LGBTQ+ community.

Why did you choose to take on a leadership role within the LGBTQ+ network?

As the mother of a transgender teen, I understand the critical importance of support and active allyship.

Not everyone feels safe or comfortable being their true selves, and I have witnessed firsthand the challenges of coming out and facing potential rejection.

My extensive network within the LGBTQ+ community and my role as an ally enable me to amplify stories, provide support, and facilitate networking and events. I am proud to offer a safe haven for anyone in need and to contribute to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels they belong.

Has leading or contributing to the LGBTQ+ network influenced your professional outlook or leadership style?

Absolutely. This role has empowered me and reinforced my commitment to inclusivity. It has also given me a broader perspective, ensuring that I consider the needs of the LGBTQ+ community in all aspects of my work.

In your view, how can business schools better support and include LGBTQ+ staff across all levels?

Business schools must foster a culture of safety and acceptance at all levels.

“Embrace your identity to foster an inclusive environment and inspire others.”

-Eleanor Platt

Continuous support and respect in everyday interactions are essential.

It is crucial to create an environment where everyone feels safe to be themselves without fear of discrimination.

What initiatives or events has your group led that you’re especially proud of? What kind of impact did they have on your community or the wider institution?

Our recent mentoring event, backed by a business platform worth 20 million euros and attended by CEOs and entrepreneurs, had a significant impact.

The event’s success has motivated me to plan even more impactful future events.

What impact on students will this network have?

The presence of the network provides a sense of support and belonging for LGBTQ+ students. Networking opportunities introduce students to LGBTQ+ business leaders, offering role models and mentors.

“Connections can improve mental health by fostering a sense of value and respect.”

-Eleanor Platt

These connections can improve mental health by fostering a sense of value and respect.

What kind of legacy or culture shift do you hope your work will contribute to for future LGBTQ+ staff?

I hope to create a lasting culture of inclusivity and belonging, supported by ongoing events that reinforce the sense of community.

What advice would you offer to new or aspiring LGBTQ+ network leaders in higher education?

The most important step is to start and be vocal about your group’s goals and plans. Support from senior leadership is crucial to amplify the group’s efforts and impact.

What guidance would you give to LGBTQ+ professionals navigating a career in business education today?

Embrace your identity to foster an inclusive environment and inspire others. Visibility helps break down stereotypes and promotes acceptance.

Advocate for inclusive policies and support services for LGBTQ+ staff and students. Build a supportive network of colleagues and allies to create opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and career advancement.

Be prepared to address challenges with resilience and prioritize your mental health and well-being.
